What started as a late-night panic attack during the depths of the pandemic ended up a song that seemed destined for a new project. It was a clear sonic departure from my earlier bands, which skewed towards heavier, post punk-indebted sounds.
But while the music was lighter, the subject material remained dark. The music and rhythms are breezy; the lyrics are suffocating. I love the juxtaposition of mellow instrumentation supporting a song about a panic attack — a tablespoon of honey to go with the vinegar.
My friend and Nightblooms bandmate Chessa Rich’s vocals provide an ethereal reminder to stay calm during these dark moments, while also providing a dose of her own pop genius in the song's final psychedelic moments. And producer Saman Khoujinian takes us into cosmic country territory with indelible slide guitar work that creates another sonic earworm.
lyrics
Awake in the night and the room is on fire
I just held closer to you
I'm catching my breath as I cling to my bed
Is this nightmare coming true?
(Baby you’re dreaming)
I’m shivering like the real thing
(Baby you’re dreaming)
If you say it again, I’ll believe it
It's just a matter of time
It’s all a matter of time
It’s just a matter of time
If all that matters is your mind
Out of the windows and under the sky
I tried my best to stay cool
So I'm closing the shutters and lacing the blinds
To keep these nightmares from you
(Baby you’re screaming)
I’m covered but I’m still cowering
(Baby you’re screaming)
Is anyone else still trembling
It’s just a matter of time…
